Slave voices and experiences in the later medieval Europe

Abstract Late medieval slavery was profoundly entangled in urban life particular. Cities all around the Mediterranean coast were implicated trade—although this article focuses on Christian which bound together by a general reliance Roman law (alongside local customary laws and canon of Church). Recently, scholarship late has proliferated, offering range detailed studies primarily based legal records. slaves predominantly women, mostly worked domestic settings. Scholars have addressed questions such as regulation; ways racialized thinking emerged; economics slavery; implications for socio‐religious frameworks; extent to integrated into societies they trafficked; role geopolitics. This flips these explore experiences themselves. Surviving records allow us see how could articulate even, limited extent, shape their own through law; what race meant slaves; experienced labour; articulated religious identities; social integration individuals; understood geopolitics situations. All slave shaped gender.
